Having 5 year old twins is keeping me broke. The motorcycles and convertibles I had when I was single (and even the first few years after getting married) are a distant memory, so I’m forced to scratch my gearhead itch by tweaking my DD, a 2008 Town Car. In stock form it’s a pig, a real parade float. 239hp just doesn’t get it done when it has to motivate a 4300lb barge, so I’m pricing out having flow work done on the heads, swapping in hotter cams, with throttle body and injector upgrades too. I’ve been told the Mod motor can get close to 400hp without forced induction (too expensive for my budget anyway) so that’s the goal; somewheres in the 350-375 range. This will require a custom tune and proper exhaust, which will probably be phase 2. Phase 3 will be adding a 3.73 Trac-Loc in place of the 3.27 open rear I have now. Updates to follow once this gets underway. (Silver lining: my boys are done with daycare this fall. Yay.)

I really, REALLY like those wheels on the Town Car. It’s the perfect amount of wrong that looks very right for reasons I cannot explain...

Might I suggest getting the trac-loc BEFORE upgrading to 375 horsepower?

Unless you want to one-wheel peel out of every stop...

Would a 5.0 swap or a Cobra R engine swap be more cost efficient?

Ported heads and new cams on a 2v....

It will need new injectors for those power levels.

It’s gonna be more expensive than you probably think to hit it....

I’d say it isn’t worth it. You’re going to spend a lot of money to upgrade power in a landbarge...the handling and brakes will still be shit and won’t be any fun to drive.

With the money you would pour in to make that town car slightly less of a rolling couch, you could just buy a built miata or e30.

5.0s are too wide according to the forum, last time I looked no one had done it yet.

The 5.0 is too wide? I didn’t think they could get much bigger than the 4.6.

Pro tip: just do the MZT and let it be. 3.73s are terrible if you do a lot of highway cruising; I think the 3.27 is the best for this car (and there is a Trac-loc out there you can swap in).

I fully support the idea of a hot rod Lincoln, but I’ve got a rule for myself about not modifying my DD. I don’t want my DD to be finicky, I just want to walk out to it, start it, and go as far as I need to that day. I keep a project car for that itch.

If I remember correctly it is and there's an issue with the shock towers

That’s amazing that Ford made an engine that’s even bigger.

Injectors are mentioned. Still researching end cost on everything. Mod motors ain't cheap to tweak - I wish this car had a 5 liter Windsor.

No surprise there, it is a parade float after all. I just want more boogie when I stomp on the pedal. So far the head work, cams, TB and injectors are up to $1600. Not quite E30 territory.

I'm with ya. I don't plan to do anything to affect the car's reliability; just want a little more boogie from the right pedal.

MZT? Vas is das? I live 5 min from work so there's not much highway driving. The jump to 3.73s means about 400 more rpm at highway speeds. 3.55 is a possibility but it's not much of an improvement over the 3.27

Kinja'd!!! Turbineguy: Nom de Zoom > Twism

Kinja'd!!!1

Good point. The mod motor isn’t a low-rpm torquer so a little restraint with the go pedal will be helpful.

If you don’t do much highway, then 3.73s are solid (they’re just too RPM-y for me, I drive 95% hwy and it’s not worth it).

MZT = MAF, ziptube, and tune - you’d need the air box/MAF and ziptube from either a Marauder or a 2004+ CVPI. Plus the tune, you’re looking at less than $500 for 250hp (from the air box setup) plus whatever you want to do with the custom tune.

If he meant the Coyote, it's an inch narrower than the 4.6 sohc so it should fit easily. Lots of room under the hood of that car. Ideally I'd have a 5 liter Windsor; much cheaper to mod those OHV motors.

Hell no. So far I'm up to about $1600 for head work, cams, TB and injectors. Swapping a complete motor would cost thousands. Cool idea though.

LoL. Well, they ARE Mustang rims so it's keeping in the family. Kind of.

Doesn't seem like much bang for the buck. Then again I'm not sure how much the tune accounts for powerwise. The problem with the stock 4.6 is flow. The heads need to be opened up so a more aggressive cam profile can take advantage of the higher cfm rate. Bigger TB and upsized injectors round out the mod. It will require a custom tune to make it all work though.

I guess that was my point - if you're gonna pay for the tune with the TB and injectors (and rear), don't forget the air box setup too.

The base Vortech V3 kit would most likely get you right where you want to be......

If you’re installing the cams and removing/installing the heads yourself, go for it. Otherwise it’s labor intensive and prices skyrocket.

Of course. I wouldn't pay to have someone else do the work I can do myself. Just the bench work on the heads is about it. Rear axle too; that's pretty specialized work that I wouldn't touch.
